Growth

A residency at ATTIC, Cardiff. A copper pipe tree bursts through the floorboards while other pipes quietly weep. An electric cable takes on a life of its own, branching and sprouting in the form of wall drawings.

ATTIC was a contemporary art project and gallery space in Cardiff dedicated to exploring personal, cultural and scientific understandings of the mind with a particular focus on the spectrum of mental health and mental illness. ATTIC was co-founded and curated by Julia Thomas and Sara Annwyl.

“Everything grows – the good, the bad, the indifferent. I want to take people on a journey up to the top of the house, the attic, neglected and marginal, an idea that operates above and beyond our everyday lives. Perhaps a nursery strewn with the forgotten lives of toys that expired when we reached puberty. I wondered what happens if they did not relinquish their meaning, refused to be ‘pruned back’? Perhaps these abandoned parts of ourselves carried on growing, as it were, unchecked?” Adams
